What is Baby Massage?

Baby massage is a longstanding parenting tradition in many cultures around the world, such as in Africa and India. Over the past 30 years baby massage has been gaining popularity in Western Cultures as well, with a larger surge since the 1990’s.

The process of Baby massage involves a primary caregiver using rhythmical strokes and soothing holds in each area of the baby’s body, following a specific sequence which has been developed over many years.

These strokes are based on Indian Massage and Swedish Massage techniques, incorporating principles from Reflexology and Yoga. All these have been designed for babies and are suitable to practice from birth onwards.

“Specially designed strokes for babies based on Indian and Swedish massage, incorporating reflexology and yoga.”

What is Baby Yoga?

Baby yoga's inspiration lies in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon native people, combined with traditional techniques used with babies in India. Birthlight's founder, Francoise Freedman's observations of these practices, and years of research, developed into the sequences we use today.

Baby yoga combines the tactile stimulation of massage with movement and rhythm, providing benefits of strengthening baby's physical body, helping babies move from reflex to voluntary movement and development of the brain and nervous system.

By incorporating gentle postnatal exercises for mother into a baby yoga class, it can help to "close" the body after birth and tone the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles.  A session of baby yoga helps to quieten the mind and promote relaxation, which in turn can help to relieve or avoid symptoms of postnatal depression.

What's more, baby yoga is fun!

Antenatal Sessions

Private 1-2-1 Workshops

Sometimes it's not easy to find a course which is suitable for you. Maybe the dates are not convenient on a full course, you already have a child/children and only want a refresher, you have specific needs and would therefore prefer a private session or maybe you want more information about a specialised subject, either way we are here to help.

Here at Bumps and beyond we offer 1-2-1 private sessions held in the convenience of your own home covering whatever you would like. The sessions are a minimum of two hours, the amount of additional hours you require will depend of your individual needs.

We will have an initial consultation, either on the phone, face to face or via email. During this consultation we will discuss what you would like to cover in your bespoke session, how long you would like and we will find a date and time which is convenient to you.

Topics which you may want to focus on may include:

  • Active Birth
  • Water Birth
  • Caesarean Birth
  • Twins
  • Refresher for second/subsequent babies

Alex Henderson

My name is Alex and I am a fully qualified Antenatal Teacher and Infant Massage Instructor.

I have been involved in antenatal education since my first child’s birth back in 2006. At that time I undertook training with the NCT to become a fully qualified Antenatal Practitioner.

Since then I have supported over 800 parents on their journey to parenthood.

After my second child’s birth in 2009 I trained with the International Association of Infant Massage and enjoy supporting parents postnatally with baby massage. It is always so nice to see the development of parents’ confidence by the end of a course.

Carol Barnes

My name is Carol and I am a fully qualified NCT Antenatal Practitioner, “Relax, stretch & breathe” teacher and an independent Baby Yoga instructor certified by Birthlight.

I decided to train with NCT after the birth of my third child in 2005, and since then have supported hundreds of parents on this amazing, life-changing journey. I have also been practising yoga for over 20 years and that passion led me to train as a yoga for pregnancy teacher; I completed level 1 of my training with the University of Worcester in September 2011 and I plan to complete level 2 in the Spring of 2014. Furthermore, to enable me to offer continuity of support to mothers who have enjoyed pregnancy yoga classes, I also decided to train as a Baby Yoga instructor with Birthlight in 2012. Of course however, baby yoga classes are equally as enjoyable for parents (and babies) who have never practised any yoga before.

Baby yoga is a wonderful follow-on from baby massage, combining the skills and techniques with movement, songs and relaxation, which is why Alex and myself decided to come together to create “Bumps and Beyond” to enable us offer complete support from pregnancy into parenthood.
